Obviously, the best possible result of our efforts is for our clients to walk again. For some clients, this may be an achievable outcome. However, we do not propose that this will be the result in every case or that it is our exclusive goal. Ideally, the benefit of our comprehensive therapy is a person with a freshly positive outlook on life and a greater appreciation of themselves, their support system, and their community. Slipping into obscurity is easy for an injured person to do, so we train and encourage each client to face the world as a participant—not an observer. Already, we have recruited two clients to participate on the local wheelchair basketball team. This gets them involved in the community and out of the house.
The old adage, “If you don’t use it, you lose it,” is extremely relevant for our clients. As a countermeasure to loss, our stimulated exercise program helps clients restore circulation, maintain muscle tone, strengthen respiratory function, and maintain heart health. Exercises and stimulations keep muscles conditioned and ready to react when control starts to return. Today as stem-cell and other therapies advance, it is important that we help keep these muscles toned, to prepare clients to take advantage of future discoveries and breakthroughs.
